Princess Farhana and Issam

Workshop

Oriental Drum Solo Choreography with Princess Farhana & Issam Houshan

Sunday March 5, 2017
1-4pm

Nothing is as exciting and exhilarating as one of Issam's live drums solos…unless Princess Farhana is choreographing it!

In this three-hour workshop, Issam breaks down all the rhythms used in the complex "Princess" drum solo, demonstrating each time signature in it’s root form as well as with embellishments when it is played for the stage.

Then you'll learn the choreography: organic movement, unexpected accents and lots of layers that can be embellished upon, leaving some "wiggle room" for a little improvisation that will make the drum solo uniquely your own. Prepare to sweat!

*Please bring finger cymbals if you play them

$50 by midnight Friday February 17 • $60 after that or at the door (space permitting!)

Katalin Schafer

Limited Time Guest

Special Guest Teacher - Katalin Schafer — 5 weeks only!

Starting January 10th
7:15-8:30pm

Tuesday Night Katalin will workshop some special topics I think you will find really exciting! Here in Los Angeles for a short time from her usual home in Budapest, Hungary, Katalin says, "I believe that movement has its own language, that is the most honest in the world. Often, the way we move, tells things about us that we, ourselves may not even be aware of. I am aiming to bring these hidden things to the surface when I dance, to make the act deeper and more meaningful. My goal is to share this perspective, self-awareness and spiritual growth with my students." Don’t miss her magic!

January 10th and 17th: Emotion in Motion - Slow Stage Bellydance
Despite what many think, it is more challenging to express slow, emotional or dramatic music than to create choreography to a dynamic one. Since slowness gives more time to observe movement's beautiful continuity, moving to slow music requires a more open and daring stage presence. This worksop is a great opportunity for those who wish to deepen their knowledge about expressing and channelling emotions on stage.

January 24th: Saidi with Double Cane Northern egyptian blood flows in this cane dance's heart. There is no dancer that would stay seated upon hearing its lovely rhythms. The choreography requires a stronger technical back ground in terms of cane handling, but if someone lacks that, a more in depth explanation can be given during the workshop too.

January 31st and February 7th: DANCERS' CHOICE Dancers will decide!!! Do you wish to learn Katalin's signature style, "Oriental Jazz"? or her extraordinary Contemporary Percussion drum solo?

(Jenna plans to resume her Intermediate/Advanced Bellydance class in February after this special guests series! Check our calendar for up-to-date info!)

Regular class pricing!! Class cards ok, no Groupon/Living Social or Passports.

Helena

Workshop

Helena Vlahos with Savicto musicians Vicki Carter (Accordion) and "Andy" An-Liang Cheng (tabla) present Baladi Progression with LIVE Music!

Sunday, January 15, 2017
1-4pm

The Balady Progression is a musical improvisation that is popular in Cairo and a favorite with bellydancers around the globe. It starts with a taqsim followed by a call and response between the drum and another instrument, such as the accordion, that gradually builds into an exciting, rapid finish. Vicki will share her knowledge of the ins and outs of baladi solos: the different types, their history of origin, the scales used, the rhythms used and the “formula”, while Helena will share her years of experience in how to move the body in harmony with the different portions of the baladi progression, interpreting the music with your movement and maximizing the effect on your sure-to-be-rapt audience!

Dancing in Heels with Neena Nour!

How to dance to modern Lebanese music - a simple way to dance in heels.

Modern Lebanese Technique Workshop with Neena Nour!

The stylization of Lebanese Bellydance.

Neena Nour is just back from the Middle East. She has worked as a dancer in a number of countries inculding Lebanon. She will be sharing her work experience, how to transition from an Egyptian base to a Lebanese style with you in this workshop session.

This can help you be more well-rounded as a dancer and increase your tips and the amount of work that you do. Lebanese music is well loved in the Arab world. If you want to see how much Lebanese songs are loved, go to a restaurant that has a live show program and you can see how much money is being thrown around from the tips for the singers when they sing Lebanese songs. Even if you are more of a stage dancer or love being apart of the dance community, this is another mezze on the table of dance to enjoy.

You do not need to dance in heels forLebanese style. It is an aesthetic. You can do the same movements the same way without. You don't need to take the heels intro if you do not want. Heels in the second half of the workshop are optional. If you come to the any of the workshops please do not bring shoes more than 3 inches.

Cory Zamora

Workshop

Classic "AmCab" Veil Ties with Cory Zamora!

Sunday, October 9, 2016
2-5pm

Cory says: "Back in my days of dressing rooms, I would watch dancers wad and stuff their veil, then hope for the best. Eight times out of 10, it did not go well. So I dove into my OCD, and developed 6 ties from the past, analyzed them to death, and now teach with the care of packing a parachute! It will only dance off as well as you put it on. In my workshop, we will learn 3 ties very different from each other. I like to use a variety of music, tempos, including modern selections. We will learn the steps used, what we can borrow from another section of the dance. A 4 yard veil is used. Mine are all from Jo Ann's "silk essence", it is a lining fabric. Pure silk does not do well with some of this. We did not use it back then. It tends to slide on itself, out of the tie during the opening song. Please bring your zills, I never take mine off. If you do not zill in your style, that is ok! I just want to make sure I teach all how to do veil with zills on.

Also, please be sure to wear something with good & tight shoulder straps so that the veil will stay on during the tie.

The following ties will be covered:
BIB tie, ..top drop, and bottom pull out
SCARF tie...unisex tie...I also teach male dancers
the classic DUCHESS ....hip poof seen so much back then

I have DVD's for all, the one with the DUCHESS has 2 other ties related to it on it, so a good deal! I will have a "bundle" price for all 3, and a free one as well.”

$58 Until midnight Friday Sept 23, 2016 • $65 Until midnight 4/9/2016 • $75 at the door

Classical Oriental Dance with Katerina Shereen - FIRST US TOUR!

Sunday, October 30, 2016
2-6pm

This in-demand instructor from the Czech Republic has become widely respected for her interpretation of Egyptian styles of bellydance, and is praised for her abilities to clearly share techniques and stylings with her students. Don't miss it, as this is almost the last stop on her tour, and space is very limited!

**20 STUDENT MAX***

This workshop will start with a short introduction to cultural development in Egypt in the 20th century, which is closely linked to the development of Egyptian dance. Students will have a chance to get an insight into the specifics of Golden Era style, and learn a choreography that represents the elegance and grace of the great dancers of the black and white movies, like Samia Gamal and Taheya Karioka.

We will compare this style to the modern interpretation of Egyptian music that is typical for Dina and Randa Kamel, and then learn a modern oriental routine that represents their style. In the remaining time we will focus on the art of improvisation. Clear instructions and tips will be provided as well as an introduction into the theory of classical egyptian music, which can be very helpful for dancers who are aimimg to master this ultimate skill in oriental dance.

Dancehall is the street/club dance of Jamaica. It is full of vibrant energy. The steps all have names (and many have songs that go with them). In this class series you will learn several different Dancehall dances, we will discuss and practice technical ways to blend them with your existing Bellydance vocabulary, and then you will learn short combos or routines that bring the two together. This class is a WORKOUT. Kneepads, a towel, and water are recommended.

Arm Yourself! Beautiful Hands & Arms for Bellydance with Jenna

June 12, 2016
2-3:30pm

Arms make the difference between *dancing* and just shaking your hips around! They frame your hard work, can showcase your grace and strength, and add another dimension to your performance. The beautifully floral hand work is a signature of bellydance, and even just the hand position itself can convey relaxed confidence and elegant poise. With a start in ballet, Jenna developed much of her upper body stylings from her extensive training with NYC mentor, Serena, herself having studied hand movements from none other than Ruth St. Denis. Jenna has designed hand, arm and posture exercises to build skills towards naturally incorporating beautiful arms into your dance. ALL LEVELS of dancer (even & especially beginners) to start good practices now, or to break quirky habits they have developed! We will practice drills for strength and flexibility in the hands and arms, technique for sinuous and graceful movements, and also use the arms as both frames and actors with dance moves and traveling steps.

Sunday September 27, 2015
7:15 doors, begins at 7:30pm

“BELLY...” is an intimate peek into the personal lives of several belly-dancers who have been profoundly affected by this unique dance form. What people are saying about “BELLY”

Boise's Cecilia Rinn's “BELLY” documentary about belly dancing is really about so much more... It's about reclaiming your body after injury and illness, and overcoming things in their lives, tied to the ancient art of bellydancing...
- Bruce Fletcher-Festival programmer, Idaho International Film Festival & Dead Channels Film Festival

So many women have been inspired by “BELLY.” It is a positive force the world needs NOW.

This series gives you the the tools to spontaneously create beautiful Oriental or fusion-style dances. Using mind and body techniques and exercises to increase your musicality, you will learn to trust your intuition and let your creative juices flow! Instead of relying on choreography alone, learn to use instinct and emotion to access your technique vocabulary, fearlessly building your own improvised pieces. Arabic song structure will become demystified through musical analysis as you learn to "illustrate" the music with your body, to both the rhythm and the melody. We'll go over musical phrasing, spatial awareness, directional concepts and use of repetition; poses, body lines and layers, techniques for mapping out marked improv, and how to relax into the music, letting it guide you. Add power and personality to your performance as you build the confidence to experiment and improvise with traditionally-based and contemporary belly dance technique.

Nicole McLaren: Beautiful Turns for Bellydancers

Wednesdays in July 8, 15, 22, 29 (no class July 1)
7:45-9pm

Is there any choreography out there, in any given dance style, without a single turn? Probably not. For sure there is no classical bellydance routine without turns – especially in the dramatic peak of the grand finale, fast consecutive turns are extremely popular. Mastering turns means enhancing the dance skills through coordination and composure and, consequently, ameliorating choreografies or improv repertoire through creative ways to turn. Moreover, being able to spin seamlessly, and seemingly effortless, creates an ambiance of shining elegance.

In this workshop we explore the wide array of possibilities to turn, with special focus on the benefit for middle eastern dancers. From Ballet to Bellydance, from Derwish spins to Tribal turns, turns with surprising level changes, on one leg, amazing back bend turns, smooth or dynamic, super speedy or in slow motion. Additionaly we learn head and chest postures and gracefully fluent hand and arm moves wich work perfectly with spins. "Beautiful Turns for Bellydancers" will reveal spectacular, stunning and excitingly new ways to turn!

Recommended for Intermediate/Advanced dancers

Sherri Wheatly presents Slinky Drum Solo Choreography

Wednesdays in June
6:45-7:45pm

...And now for something completely different...

Percussive movement and muscle control--the two great tastes that taste great together!

For this four week Wednesday series, we explore combining the seemingly opposite ends of the fusion bellydance movement spectrum. Locks, pops, shimmies and isolations associated with the classic drum solo alternating with a slinkfest of muscle control and serpentine resistance. Our initial focus will be on drills connecting us to the movement as well as enhancing our musicality. Each week, we will dance through the similar drills establishing muscle memory specific to our goals. We will then culminate in a final complete short choreography. I have specifically tailored this short series to be accessible to all levels. The focus here is strong technique. Please bring zills (if you don't have them, we have extra sets at the studio) and comfortable clothing that allows me to see body alignment.

Pre-register to save: $42 for all 4 classes!
Registration strongly encouraged as choreography will be learned progressively each week. Drop-ins permitted with class card and same day discount, no Groupon/Living Social or Passport.

Arm Yourself! Beautiful Hands & Arms for Bellydance with Jenna

June 28, 2015

Group Improv Crash Course: an afternoon with Heavy Metal Tribal

This class will explore group improvisation. We will cover a few basics and their cues, then practice leading and following in duets and groups. As a finale, we will create a combo and cue together to demonstrate the application of these principles.

This class is great for dancers of all styles and levels, and will enhance your toolbox for performing with others. A valuable format to apply to dancing in a group cabaret style too!

Heavy Metal Tribal does bellydance group improvisation. Dancers Azza, Shailee, Shauntel and Shoop came into collaboration with a variety of influences, including the improv languages of Fat Chance Bellydance®, Black Sheep, Evil Eye, Gypsy Caravan, She'enedra, Hot Pot and Square Dancing. They have each studied folkloric and Egyptian styles with various master teachers in addition to their own personal fitness regimens that include swing, hip hop and boxing. The result is a unique, exciting blend of improv that honors the form while breathing new life into it.

Rayna Renee

Workshop

RANYA RENÉE of NYC!!! "Organic Oriental" Workshop

Sunday, February 22, 2015
2-5:30pm

Organically Grown Egyptian Oriental
We'll tap into a vintage vibe, one that never goes out of style, to mine the gold from a traditional approach to Egyptian rhythms and steps in Oriental dance. This will be an approach to Oriental dance that is driven by the melody line of the music and how it evolves. We’ll start with a juicy old-school baladi-shaabi warmup, to get the body’s internal relationships cooking between floor and hips, and work posturally for elegant support all the way up. Then we’ll move into organic Oriental in-place and traveling combinations, working with different types of steps that are traditionally applied to specific rhythms, in the context of melodic phrasing… also how to travel without traveling far, and how to travel farther but still get back home in time. Many dancers stick with just the rhythmic cycles and the usual counts of 8, but focusing on the melody line brings out the romantic essence of the dance and allows for greater personal expression. Strong and graceful use of the hands and arms will aid physical phrasing of the melody and direct the audience’s attention. Breathing along with the musical phrases will bring out the overarching melody line, helping to avoid a choppy look and smoothing transitions between phrases and sections. We’ll address how to count so that it doesn’t look “count-y,” and also how to stop counting to focus on the feeling and directionality of the music. In terms of music selections, we’ll dance to a variety of classy, tasteful pieces…plus a few raunchy numbers to spice things up for ya. :-) Exercises will include technique drills workout, guided combination and evolution of key steps within and between different rhythms, musicality practice, and improvisation work.

Some history on this topic:
Ranya had a mind-blowing 8-hour-long private-lesson marathon with the legendary Mona el Saeed in Egypt several years ago. As they worked on baladi material, Mona noted several steps that were tied to different rhythms in the music, and this was something of a revelation. For traditionally trained Oriental dancers in Egypt (like Mona), certain steps go well with certain rhythms, while others just don’t work as well—and this is a bit different from the typical approach to the dance seen in the US, and even in some cases, in Westernized Egyptian folklore, where movements may be mixed-and-matched. The "organic" approach is typically seen in Egyptian Oriental dancers who don’t come from a folklore background. Since many top teachers today did come from folkloric companies, it is harder to find trained teachers that focus strongly on the more (ironically) "native" approach to interpreting Oriental dance music. This is the approach we'll work with today, building confidence on how to choose authentic tried-and-true movements on the spot, and how to make these movement choices look crisp and comfortable even when they are improvised.

Only $75 until 2/16 • $85 pre-registration until 2/22 • $90 door

Private Coaching

Coaching with Ranya - Breathwork for Performance

Private and semi-private lessons and coaching with Ranya in technique or performance skils are possible at DanceGarden before or after the workshop. Please contact Ranya directly at office@ranya.neto for more information and to schedule a session. Per-hour rates are $100 (one person), $150 (two), $180 (three) or $200 (four), plus studio rental. You may contact DanceGardenLA@gmail.com regarding studio rental, a special rate will be offered for Ranya’s private classes in the small room.

Ranya began developing her breathwork method in 1996 as a way to maintain upper back posture for Egyptian dance, discovered its potential for connection with audiences, and has been performing with it and teaching it to dancers and other artists around the world ever since. Breathwork for Performance draws on energizing and calming uses of the breath from body-mind practices and theater, and applies them to an in-the-moment way of dancing, moving and being present. This method creates a heightened sense of awareness on the part of both the performer and the audience, creating a bridge of energy between them. If you want to increase your onstage charisma, develop more spontaneity and openness in your dance, or if you have ever struggled with stage fright or nervousness, feeling disconnected with an audience, difficulty relaxing into your dance, or feeling like your energy wasn’t filling the room, this material is for you. You’ll learn tools of how to reach out to an audience while relaxing yourself at the same time, and how to incorporate the physical techniques of breathwork and pelvic floor energy work into your own technique. (Ranya is presenting on her breathwork method at the 2015 Performance Psychology Conference in San Diego on Saturday.)

For more information visit http://ranya.net/breathwork or email Ranya.

Tribal Fusion with Sherri Wheatly

Sundays 12:30 - 1:30pm
Starting Sunday January 4, 2015

Mixed Level Tribal Fusion Bellydance: Technique, Drills and Combinations

Technique is developed by the establishment and reinforcement of muscle memory. When we have earned it through drilling and conditioning, we focus on application and "the flow." Movement that considers the path, not just hurrying from point A to point B. or rushing through counts. Herein lies the grace and artistry of dance. Class will be structured into warm up, drilling and finally technique application. Featuring less choreography and more short "building block" focused combinations, this class will feature a more set curriculum featuring shimmy drills, slow and sinuous muscle control drills, a cool down yoga practice, zill work and more. Open to mixed levels (basic knowedge of ATS (American Tribal Style) and/or bellydance vocabulary is helpful, but not necessary—all levels are welcome). I would like to incorporate zills (finger cymbals) into some of our drills, so if you have some, please bring them!

Also, just as important as the instrument that we are working with is the connection between our minds and bodies. For this reason, we are going to focus on the psychological side of dance and performance from opening yourself fully to learning something new and making peace with the fact that this is a process, to gaining confidence in yourself and bringing that to your experience both in and out of class. Remember: Life is improv. Get comfortable with it in the dance studio, get better at rolling with the punches outside of the dance studio. True stories!

This trio of musicians, on tabla, cajon, violin, riqq and accordion, really made a splash when appearing for the first time with bellydancers at Bob’s in North Holllywood. Come see what the buzz is about when Jenna, Angelika Nemeth, and another surprise guest dance in the moment to the Arabic classics interpreted by this talented group.

SAVICTO, formed in 2013, sprang out of a shared passion for music of the world. Members met while performing with the UCLA Near Eastern Ensemble. Their respect for the value and richness of cultural diversity serves as the force that drives them to cross musical borders.

Sachi Yoshimoto is a LA based violinist and performer of Middle Eastern, jazz, rock and world music. She studied classical violin at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, Los Angeles. She performs regularly with the National Arab Orchestra, SK Near East Ensemble, Turath Ensemble and New York Arabic Orchestra.

Drum Solo Choreography, Rhythmic Breakdown & Finger Cymbals with Princess Farhana and Issam Houshan

Sunday, November 23, 2014
12:30-3:30pm

Nothing is as exciting and exhilarating as one of Issam’s live drums solos…unless, of course, Princess Farhana is choreographing it! In this workshop, you’ll learn how to listen for drum solo phrases with and without embellishments, anticipate and prepare for rhythmic changes, and play finger cymbals in the call and response patterns in the “Princess” drum solo from Issam’s new BaLAdi Tour CD.

The class starts with a full breakdown of the rhythms, concepts and finger cymbal patterns* used in this unique drum solo so you can become comfortable with them. In the second half of the class, you’ll learn the full choreography. Expect amusing accents, hot technique, and organic movement that can be layered and embellished upon, leaving a some “wiggle room” for a little improvisation that will make the drum solo uniquely your own. Prepare to sweat!

Finger cymbals are encouraged, but not necessary! Please bring your cymbals if you use them!

No passports, groupon or class cards.

October 2014

The Golden Age of Egyptian Cinema refers to the period from the late 1930’s through the early 1960’s. Many of the films created during this time were lavishly produced romantic musicals full of wonderful music and featured exquisite dancers like Naima Akef, Samia Gamal and Tahia Carioca, who were the superstars of the era. Each of these stars had their own unique dance style, while they retained a softness, fluidity, and subtle, deceptively simple movements. Historically, from a dancer's point of view, these movies are very important because they provide a filmed record of the transition from the traditional, earthy raqs al baladi to the raqs sharqi we know today.

In the first four weeks of this series, you’ll learn some history of the Golden Age and it's stars, and the signature moves from stars Naima Akef, Samia Gamal, and Tahia Carioca as well as some of the lesser known dancers like Suzy Khairy, Ne'amat Mohktar, Katy, and Hoda Shamseddin. We'll run combinations to music from The Golden Age, such as the work of Farid El Atrache, Mohamed Abdel Wahab, and the great Um Kalthoum.

In the second four weeks of this series, you will learn a full Golden Age style choreography (with finger cymbals and veil) to the classic 1952 song “Leila”.

Just pay as you would for any normal class (no Groupons or Passports, sorry!) or use the button above for a super-savings on a package deal.

October is the perfect month for dressing up, and why not learn the moves while you're at it?

Come join me every Saturday in October at Dance Garden LA to learn a full routine of Baba Karam, a celebrated Persian dance where women mimic the way that the working-class men in Iran, during the 60s and 70s, would dress and sometimes act.

'Baba' in this sense translates from Farsi (the Iranian language) into the expression "man" and Karam is slang for "Chah Keram" meaning "I'm at your service."

Typically in the Baba Karam dance, the upper body motion is emphasized, with hand motions, hip undulations and facial expressions being points of attention.

This dance is popular in Persian parties where guests celebrate it as a fun, expressive dance, often putting on a fedora hat, typical of the Baba Karam costume.

About Masa:
Iranian-born and LA-raised dancer, choreographer, movement director, and instructor, Masa has been dancing Persian since she could walk. As artistic director of her dance company, she creates original dance works in the Bellydance, Persian Dance, Bollywood, and Hip Hop dance genres. She loves teaching all levels of dance, especially choreographies students can perform.

Princess Farhana

Wonderful Wednesday Workshops

Black and White: Egyptian Golden Age Style Belly Dance (History, Technique, and Choreogrpahy) with Princess Farhana

Every Wednesday in September and October, 2014
6:45-7:45pm

Arm Yourself! Beautiful Hands & Arms for Bellydance with Jenna

June 29, 2014

Gulf Grooves: Persian Bandari Dance with Carolyn Krueger

Mergence (Oriental Entrance) Workshop with Bahaia of Texas!

Saturday, December 14
2:30-5:30pm

pre-registration $52, $60 door

Mergence represents the apex of sophistication in Arabic music and dance. The complex composition demands an attentive and educated ear, and a developed understanding of movement in relation to rhythm, melody, and tradition. This musical structure became prominent in the 1970s, most notably with compositions commissioned by mega-star Nagua Fuad; Mashaal and Set el Hosn, for example. The Mergence, also known as Magency and Mise-en-Scene, is a showpiece that stands apart from folk songs and earlier forms of verse/chorus arrangement, offering the dancer the opportunity to showcase a variety of mood and theme in a complex arrangement. The Mergence is one entity - a complete thought, or thesis - that usually includes the following elements: a prelude, a theme which may or may not repeat, taqsim, a folkloric element, a short drum solo, and a finale.

In this workshop, Bahaia will share more information about the historical significance of the Mergence; we will dissect the structure into logical and manageable bites of music; you will learn how to recognize a Mergence when you hear one; and you will learn a short choreography to the “theme”.

"Take your preconceptions of elite Egyptian dance and throw them out the window! Bahaia redefines elegance—with a sharp twist," (Blume Bauer, President of Middle Eastern Culture & Dance Association [MECDA].)

Bahaia is a long time mover and shaker in the national belly dance community. She is the founder of the Austin Belly Dance Convention, the producer of HOT Seminars—with over 35 events to her credit. Her productions include the notorious Cabaret Dance Camp, an original event that has served as a model for many others.

Bahaia is a featured video artist of Cheeky Girls Productions, appearing in 3 solo instructional titles and six additional performance and instructional productions. She is the owner of Austin Bellydance studio, a member of Sabaya Bellydance Collective and the founder and president of the Aria Dance Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting belly dance as art.

As a teacher, coach and contest judge, Bahaia offers a discerning eye for talent and artistry, over 20 years of experience in the field of belly dance, and true passion for seeing dancers achieve their personal best.

Learn to Play FINGER CYMBALS!
Nov 6, 13, 20 and Dec 4 and 11

$50 for entire series ($10/class!!)

5 Wednesdays from 6:45- 7:45

If you call them zills, finger cymbals, sagat, or "those little bell things they use on their fingers", they are the signature of the bellydancer. Zils can announce your arrival, instigate excitement, bolster the rhythm, add a cheeky flair and even save the day if the music cuts out! Finger Cymbals are an essential part of the complete bellydancer -- and Jenna will introduce these simple yet challenging instruments to you in a clear, approachable way. Zills take practice, and that's just what we'll do -- drills to strengthen fingers and produce different sounds, drills to increase speed, and tricks to remember more complex rhythms.

Attention BEGINNING ZILLERS!! THIS CLASS IS MEANT FOR YOU! You do not need ANY finger cymbal experience to attend. However, Basic Bellydance movements will NOT be broken down in this class, so some beginning bellydance experience is strongly recommended. DanceGarden has Beginner classes 6 times a week!

Class is cumulative. If you wish to pay with a class card, all 5 sessions will be crossed out on your card on the first day. No Passports or Beginner Flex. Students can also take advantage of Same-Day Discount and stay for Zahra's class for only $11.

Beautiful Turns for Bellydancers
with Nicole of Switzerland

$32 before 11/1, $45 after, $50 at the door

Sunday, November 17, 2013 -- 12:30 - 2:30pm
(Intermediate/Advanced Level)

Is there any choreography out there, in any given dance style, without a single turn? Probably not. For sure there is no classical bellydance routine without turns, especially in the dramatic peak of the grand finale where fast consecutive turns are extremely popular. Mastering turns means enhancing your dance skills through coordination and composure and, consequently, ameliorating choreographies or improv repertoire through creative ways to turn. Moreover, being able to spin seamlessly, and seemingly effortlessly, creates an ambiance of shining elegance.

In this workshop we will explore the wide array of possibilities for turning: from Ballet to Bellydance, from Derwish spins to Tribal twirls, turns with surprising level changes, those on one leg, amazing back bend turns, smooth or dynamic, super speedy or slow motion -- all with special focus on the benefit for middle eastern dancers. Additionally, we will learn head and chest positions and gracefully fluent hand and arm moves which work perfectly with spins. "Beautiful Turns for Bellydancers" will reveal spectacular, stunning and exciting new ways to turn!

ARM YOURSELF!
Technique for Beautiful Hands,
Arms and Carriage in Bellydance

Only $50 for entire series ... that's $10/class!
or just pay per class or with card (Even Passports OK! No Beginner Flex)

5 Wednesdays: October 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 from 6:45- 7:45

Arms make the difference between *dancing* and just shaking your hips around! They frame your hard work, can showcase your grace and strength, and add another dimension to your performance. The beautifully floral hand work is a signature of bellydance, and even just the hand position itself can convey relaxed confidence and elegant poise. With a start in ballet, Jenna developed much of her upper body stylings from her extensive training with NYC mentor, Serena, herself having studied hand movements from none other than Ruth St. Denis. Jenna's hand, arm and posture excercises are best in a series as they build skills that must be repeated for the dancer to naturally incorporate beautiful arms into her dance. She is excited for this opportunity to work with dancers of ALL LEVELS to start good practices now, or to break quirky habits they have developed! We will practice drills for strength and flexibility in the hands and arms, technique for sinuous and graceful movements, and also use the arms as both frames and actors with dance moves and traveling steps.

Drop-ins permitted for $16 OR with 5 or 10 Class Cards or Passports! No Beginner Flex. Students can also take advantage of Same-Day Discount and stay for Zahra's class for only $11.

Guest Workshop

Hardcore Floor:
Old-School AmCab and Turkish Bellydance Floorwork

$28 by 8/28 ($32 after, $38 at door)

SUNDAY September 8, 2013 from 1-3pm

This workshop will cover the strengthening exercises to develop necessary flexibility and muscles for dynamic floorwork. You will learn moves for traveling, descent, ascent, back bends, lay outs, Zar motions and some nearly extinct (and very wild) Turkish moves and Rom gestures for floor. Floorwork for both drum solo and taxim will be explored. We will not do Turkish Drops but we will cover safety and preparation for working towards them and minimizing risk of injury. Due to the strenuous nature of the workshop, we will take some breaks to watch vintage footage of different styles of floorwork. Alli will also lecture on considerations to take into account around costuming, stage and audience before opting to go to floor. If you’d like to prep for endurance during class, practice planks (in all directions), bridges and squats or any quad strengthening exercises. Highly recommended: kneepads, long leggings (not bare legs) and leg warmers or something to protect the tops of your feet (check out “Leotoes” with top pads). Alli began studying AMCAB in 1998. Her “floorwork gurus” have included Diane Webber, Anaheed, Cory Zamora, Alexandra King and Princess Banu of Turkey. She has been a principal dancer in both Perfumes of Araby and Desert Sin and recently founded troupe YIlan Kabilesi. She lives and teaches American Cabaret in Helsinki and travels regularly to continue her dance studies.

Special Series

ITS: Improvisational Tribal Style

Only >$100 $90!!! for the entire series (8 hours!).

4 Sundays: July 21, 28; August 4, 11 from 12:30 - 2:30pm

Now is your chance to learn Improvisational Tribal Style Bellydance in the style of UNMATA! Always danced in a group, ITS relies on a series of cues and combos to create a group synergy through improvisation. This cohesiveness happens very quickly - within minutes you will be following and leading dance cues you didn’t know when you walked in, with people you have just met! Once you know the basic vocabulary, you can dance with other ITS students anytime, anywhere!

We will dance Hot Pot ITS, as created by Amy Sigil of Unmata. HPITS is a wonderful introduction to bellydance for beginners, and an enticing style for experienced dancers to add to their repertoires. All levels are welcome! ITS 1 is usually taught as an 8-week course, but we will tackle two weeks’ worth of material each session to learn it all in 4 weeks!

Students should wear yoga pants or similar (flowy skirts are not ideal for HPITS) and a snugly-fitting top or bare midriff (so instructor can see body movement). Bring water and an eagerness to learn. Dance is for everyone! Women and men of all ages welcome!

Jennifer Knott Biswas, Certified HPITS Instructor Jennifer Knott Biswas has been dancing Hot Pot ITS for 5 years and is a certified HPITS teacher. She dances with the ITS bellydance troupe, The Nautch Conspiracy (www.facebook.com/NautchConspiracy) and with the L.A. Bellydance Improv Academy, or L.A.B.I.A.. She is also a member of Belly Fusion Los Angeles or B.F.L.A. Her other love is fire, and she directs the Los Angeles-based fire arts company, Entropy Arts Firedance, as well as the 50-person Burning Man fire conclave, L.A. Fire Brigade. Jenn is primarily interested in the fusion of dance with technical fire spinning, large-scale choreography, the community-building and therapeutic aspects of ITS, and the transformational effects that dance, fire spinning, and all flow arts create in peoples’ lives.

Whirling: An Introduction with
Nicole McLaren of Switzerland

$32 before 8/8 ($45 after, $50 at the door)

Sunday, August 18 12:30 - 3pm

Every belly dancer will dramatically improve her technique through Whirling, as turns are a core element of Middle Eastern dance. A dancer who masters constant whirling will seamlessly, and seemingly effortlessly, cope with fast and consecutive spins, which are very popular in the grand finale of a classical dance routine. In Egypt, Whirling is widely renowned, while in many Western countries it is still rarely seen on stage. Consequently, the spectacular effects enchant all the more.

In the workshop, dancers will learn about historical and cultural origins. A detailed handout includes educational information and even a pattern for sewing a Whirling skirt (Tanoura). Specific exercises sharpen the focus in order to prepare the body for the new movement sensation and to avoid dizzyness. After learning the technique, every dancer discovers the whirling experience individually. This workshop explores new areas of dancing, refines a belly dancer's spinning skills and broadens her style spectrum. Whirling is meditation in motion and, simultaneously, a spectacular stage dance – and just so much fun!

Guest Workshop

Karim Nagi Workshops! Yes!

2 Workshops with this multi-talented teacher!

Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 1:15 to 3:15pm
MAQAM and TAQSIM FOR DANCERS:
Maqam is the Arabic system of scales and melody creation. All songs, weather classical, pop or dance, are created in a Maqam, which dictates whether the song is happy, somber, uplifting, spiritual or sensual. We align notes in the scale with specific body isolations, allowing them to follow a maqam by using her dance vocabulary. Dancers will learn how to recognize, sing and move to maqams by learning famous song examples. Special attention will be given to Taqsim, the art of instrumental solo improvisation. The dancer will practice interpreting the instrumental music into movement and personifying the mood of the music. This workshop is vital for dancers who wish to better interpret melody into movement.

Saturday, May 4th, 3013 from 3:45 - 5:45pm
DRUM SOLO : DANCER-DRUMMER COMMUNICATION:
This workshops bridges the gap between the two diciplines. Students will learn how interpret sound into movement by aligning body parts and motions with drum sounds and riffs. Once the movement-to-sound coorespondence is established, students will prepare to perform to drum solos. The six-part drum-solo will be explained, theme by theme. Students will then perform to any combination of these 6 major drum solo themes. Students will learn how to both lead and follow the drummer by maintaining the common language. Improvisation skills will be encouraged, and the daunting prospect of dancing to a LIVE drum solo will be demystified. This dance workshop can also be configured to include drummers as well.

Karim Nagi is a native Egyptian drummer, DJ, composer and folk dancer. He is the creator of Turbo Tabla, and has released four internationally distributed CDs of this unique brand of Arab House/Electronica using acoustic instruments. Karim has authored instructional DVDs for the Tabla/Doumbek, Riqq tambourine, Maqam & Taqsim, Drum Solo for Dance, and Arab Folk Dance. He is well versed in the ultra-traditional styles of music, and has lead the Sharq Arabic Music Ensemble since 1999. He promotes and fosters the study of Arab dance in the USA as the director of the Arab Dance Seminar. Karim performs and teaches Tahteeb Cane Dance, Dabka Line Dance, and Zikr Sufi Dance. He taught at the New England Conservatory of Music for 5 years, and has lectured and presented at Harvard, MIT, Yale, Bowdoin, Princeton, Stanford, William & Mary, Georgetown, and several Community Colleges. Additionally, Karim Nagi's Arabiqa program has conducted over 300 school assemblies across America, exposing young audiences to Arab traditional arts. His performances boast a dynamic concoction of live drumming and dance, done in unison. Because of his proficiency in both music and dance, his workshops deliver students to a new physical understanding of the connection between these two disciplines.

BaheyyaGamal

Sunday Series

Egyptian Rhythms

for Oriental Dance

with

Gamal Goma & Baheyya el-Ghazal!

CANCELLED Please accept our apologies for the change.

What is the difference between "real" Saidi rhythm, and the Maksoum often played for popular Saidi songs? What is syncopation – why is it important for Oriental Dance? These are just a couple of the topics Legendary Tabla Master Gamal Gomaa and International Bellydancer Baheyya El-Ghazal will cover in their joint workshop series for dancers. Melody, rhythm, accents, timing – the professional dancer keeps all these elements spinning simultaneously. For choreographers, digging deeper into the music allows more dynamic accents and interpretation; for dancers who aspire to work with live music, understanding this shared language is an invaluable asset. For all dancers, this series is a rare glimpse into the mechanics and magic of Egyptian music and dance.

Sunday, May 5, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm CANCELLED
Introduction and Overview: This seminar will bring dancers through some of the most popular rhythms (Saidi, Malfouf, Felahi, Semaiet and Khaleegy), breaking down structure and variation, timing and syncopation. Bring a veil (optional).

Class will combine lecture, demonstration, steps, combos and choreography accompanied by live tabla.

Open to all levels – professionals, beginners and everything in between encouraged to participate!
Please bring a notebook and pen.

Sunday, April 7 from 12:30-3:30pm

Then this class is for you!

Masa: Baba Karam

Workshop

BABA KARAM Persian Dance workshop with Masa

$28 before 2/25 ($30 after, $35 at door)

SUNDAY March 3, 2013 from 1-3pm

In the much-oved Baba Karam dance, the dancer mimics the way that the working-class men in Iran, during the 60s and 70s, would dress and sometimes act.

Register by 2/25 and save!
